As the nation, along with the world, plunged into an unprecedented healthcare, economic and social crisis, Mahindraites rose in solidarity by keeping the factories and canteens running to deliver face shields, masks, aerosol boxes, meals, rations and more.
Mahindra Group partnered with the state machinery to mitigate the shock being felt by the citizens, especially the migrant labourers. The company stepped up its efforts and got into unknown territory by producing or arranging for protective gear for frontline healthcare workers across the country. Mahindra’s employees faced many challenges in procurement of quality medical grade parts. Initially the face shields were procured from a vendor, but subsequently they were manufactured at the major Mahindra plants i.e. Nashik, Zaheerabad, Haridwar, Chakan, Mohali, Pithampur, Rudrapur, Jaipur and Vadodara. Since the beginning of the lockdown over 4,00,000 face shields have been distributed to the police, hospitals and various government agencies across India. The hospitals that received the masks and PPE items from the Group included AIIMS and Deendayal Hospital in Delhi, and Wockhardt, Fortis, Kokilaben, Bhabha, Tata Memorial and KEM hospitals in Mumbai, amongst others.
Saral Design, a start-up based in Navi Mumbai, involved in the business of sanitary pads and related machinery, reached out to the Group to convert their machines to produce face masks. After the initial discussion, the Auto and Farm sector teams of the Mahindra Group took up the manufacturing. Work began on war footing, with Mahindra employees working round the clock, which resulted in over 30,000 3-ply masks being produced daily, and over 1.4 million face masks being distributed across the country since the lockdown. Not just in India, even Mahindra’s arm in the US – Mahindra Automotive North America (MAgNA) – innovated a uniquely designed aerosol box. A design contest was launched across all major plants in India to come up with a design suitable for the country. Within 72 hours, a design was selected by an eminent jury and since then more than 600 units of the newly designed aerosol box have been used across 30 hospitals in Maharashtra, Telagana, Delhi, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, and the District Magistrate office in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. To cater to the severely impacted migrant labour community, the Group decided to keep all the 17 kitchens at its various plants open 24x7 to cook and supply meals to them. They were able to cater to 9000 people daily, and over the period of the pandemic, 4.2 lakh meals were distributed across locations.
During the pandemic when most of the country was in lockdown, a record 6,000 man-days were clocked across Mahindra factories as employees volunteered to reach out to those in need. The Group through its committed actions showcased the spirit of Rise for Good, which is a call to action to make the world a better place.
